I know the title of this article is going to fly in the face of reason and possibly ruffle a few web developers feathers but if you want to have a successful online business, remember this:

There is a reason why I say this, and it is drawn from my nearly 20 years experience in working as a website developer.

You see, most people who hire a website designer make the same mistake:

They think that as soon as their website is built, traffic will automatically follow.

Hands up if you think also think that.

Even the most competent and qualified website developer, who can build the best looking websites, cannot guarantee that the website he or she builds will attract any visitor to its pages.

If you have talked to a developer who has assured you of the contrary, then you have been mislead. The design of a website is only a fraction of what is required to build a successful online business.

Designing a website is easy. Making it successful requires a lot of work.

That is not to say that web developers are a dying breed nor is it to imply that they are incapable of generating traffic to the websites they work on.

But the traffic they generate, the rise in rank in the various search engines for judiciously selected keywords they target, the implementation of social media methodology designed to increase social signals, the email building list process, the pay per click campaigns… all that can take weeks, months, or even years. Web developer who can do these things are worth their weight in gold and their clients are always happy to pay them their monthly fees, since they are making money themselves.

Here is something else that most people who want to build an online business have in common:

  6. Have you spent any time researching the competition?
  7. Do you know that anything about keywords and more importantly do you know which keywords are likely to bring you the traffic you will need to succeed.
  8. Are you comfortable with social media?
  9. Do you know what email marketing is all about?
